The Great Living Chola temple is referred to the collection of three famous granite temples all dedicated to Lord Shiva.

These are the Brihadeeshwara temple in Thanjavur, The Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple and the Airavateshvara temple at Darasuram.

The latter two were recently added to the world heritage extensions. As I was making plans, I added the Gangaikondacholapuram temple and Airawateeswarar Temple in Darasuram to my itinerary at the insistence of my hubby as these 3 temples make up the UNESCO heritage listing of Great Living Chola Temples.

These 3 temples lie about 50 miles roughly apart and I had hired a taxi to visit all the 3 temples in a day.The Great Living Chola temples trail takes us to 3 capitals of the ancient and mighty Chola Empire which was a major maritime power controlling vast parts of South East Asia in the th centuries.
